I had some Monroe Sensatrac on my car for about three and a half years, ending January 2001. I bought them at the local parts store, paid $250 for all four. Installation was under $300, I forget the exact figure, but that included an alignment (not strictly necessary, but recommended).

I was pretty happy with their handling, they seemed to give a very controlled ride, though they were a tad stiff. For some reason that I have yet to figure out, with the Monroes, there was much less vibration from my car, particularly the rear end..

Now I have the OE BOGE shocks/struts on there. These can be had for roughly $400 for a set of four. Installation on these was $300 or less, my shop charges $78 an hour, so less than four hours. So that's $700. I find the ride much better than the Monroes, and the handling has improved also. But, there is a lot more vibration everywhere in the car (again, particularly the rear end) than with the Monroes.

As for the Bilsteins...most people say that they are very stiff on the 9000. My shop tells me they've had several customers have them put on, then taken off in short order for this reason. Or, had them sent to Bilstein for revalving so they aren't so stiff..


The only way your mechanic could come up with those kind of prices, is if you have a 9000CD with the Nivomat self leveling suspension in the rear, or he's just gouging you on the parts or labor, or both..
