Interesting how many different attacks there are. I just did a clutch replacement and found that starter removal was one of the toughest parts of that job.

The rear nut is easy. Lie on the top of the engine and remove it with a 17 mm socket and ratchet. Easy, just make sure the socket is deep enough. For the front bolt, I went from the top of the engine with a precise extension length, somewhere between 9" and 11". You will probably need multiple extension pieces. You need to thread behind the oil filler tube and nestle the extension on top of the knock sensor. It's a tight fit through a maze of stuff, but the key is proper extension length. Frankly, the 3 foot extension from the wheel well sounds really interesting to me, and may well be the way to go. I do believe that serious mechanics should have lots of socket extensions on hand, and should be creative in their use!
