There is only one band adjustment, and it can be done very easily with the tranny in the car. The adjustment is done from outside the tranny and takes about 15 minutes, if that. It *might* help.

There is slipping, and then there's slipping. In one case, the transmission pauses between gears, and the engine overrevs. For example, instead of a smooth shift from third to fourth, the tranny shifts out of third, pauses in neutral (engine revs go up because no load and your foot still on the gas), then drops into fourth, sometimes with a bang. This problem can be due to weak or broken accumulator springs in the valve body. The valve body can be easily removed and serviced. A new set of springs should be in the $200-$300 (parts & labor) range. Maybe less.

The other slipping is while the car is in gear. You're driving along, and when you go up a hill, or try and accelerate, the revs go up much more than the wheel speed. Sometimes this may happen just as the tranny has shifted into a gear. This is more serious. That can be worn clutch packs, or a fried Torque Converter. This requires tranny dissasembly.

I assume the fluid level is good. If the tranny fluid smells burnt, I'd suspect scenario #2 (the $$$ one). Either condition, the more you drive the tranny like this, the more parts are wearing, and the closer you are to needing a rebuild.

Find a good tranny shop that know the ZF transmission. A Saab dealer probably can't help - they treat transmissions like light bulbs - if it goes bad, remove it and install a new one. If they do trannys, they probably send them out. Have them diagnose it. It may be cheap.

If you do need a rebuild, my recommendation is to contact Eriksson Industries. The do Saab trannies, and I understand that they dyno test them before shipping them out. That's important, because I've had shops rebuild an autobox, and it ate itself up in a matter of a couple of miles. The shop took the car back and re-rebuilt the tranny on their nickle, but I was out of the car for yet another week.

I haven't priced one recently, but you can get a rebuilt Eriksson tranny for about $1800 delivered, and assume another $600 for installation. About $2400 is a reasonable price for a rebuilt autobox, either an Eriksson installed by a shop, or your tranny COMPLETELY rebuilt by a reputable shop. Less is good, but ask LOTS of questions.

Good luck!
