Find a willing friend and have them pump the clutch (car off) while you watch the pressure plate. The transmission is locatd on the driver's side of the engine. Near the place where they meet (roughly beneath the distributor) there is an inspection port. You may have to remove a piece of plascit, but you can look in and with a flashlight, inspect the actuation of the pressure plate and clutch slave cylinder.

A couple of questions you should investigate:

(1) Is the hydraulic fluid in the yellow reservoir noticably lower? The brake system and clutch system use the same fluid and reservoir and a decreased level may indicate that there is a leak in the system.

(2) Do you see a dark, "wet" spot underneath the transmission bell housing? (This is the big round thing on the bottom of your engine that comes closest to the ground. The interface between the engine and transmission is denotated by some rubber pieces.) Is there fluid dripping down from the engine that doesn't look like oil? This may be hydraulic fluid from the slave - be careful it is caustic.

(3) If you have the time you might want to try "bleeding" the clutch hydraulic system. There are manty posts on this board that detail techniques - usually they involve applying higher than atmospheric pressure to the hydraulic fluid reservoir and then draining fluid out of the "bleed Valve" which screws into the slave cylinder, which is unfortunately inside the transmission. One can easily bleed hydraulic fluid through the system without removing the transmission, but unfortunately replacement of the slave cylinder requires transmission removal. This is a tractable task, though I wouldn't want to try it for the first time under such short notice.
