Well, considering you paid less than half what the car originally
sold for and the car has more than half its' life left, I wouldn't be
so concerned about maintenance issues. Before 100k you'll
probably need a water pump, but it may take longer. Changing
the plugs every 12k miles and keeping the gap @ 1mm will go
a long way to prolonging the life of your DI. The BPC and BPV
are probably the most weakest elements on the engine management
system, IMHO. But, if your seat of the pants tells you it has a whole
lot of get-up-and-go, then they're probably both still functioning as
they should - the BPC can set you back close to $200, while there
are better designed BPV's for about $100. Other than those minor
components, I can't think of anything else, maintenance-wise, to
say. I have a '98 CSE engine in my '92 CC. I bought it w/10k and
put about 34K since. Both the engine and transmission have
performed flawlessly - and I'm getting significantly more hp than
a stock '98. I haven't used any other oil but synthetic in the motor.
I started out with Mobil 1, but have been using Royal Purple for the
last 20k miles. The transaxle has Saab synthetic, also. But, to
answer your original question: the '98 was probably the best year
to buy a 9000. Some might argue that the '97 Aero was the best
year, but the '98 CSE must surely be the equal when all things are
considered - I know, it doesn't have the Aero seats, but it does
have another year of refinement for the rest of the technology that's
incorporated.
