Standard is 55W high and 55W low.

The 55W I use are sold as "high-efficiency" bulbs. They are supposed to be around 30% brighter than standard 55W bulbs, and they look significantly brighter. Then, new bulbs are likely to look brighter than old ones anyway. I have seen bulbs marked as "Xenon" that claim the same 30% improvement, so maybe they are the same thing. These bulbs give a white light just like any standard halogen bulb - no funny colours involved. the 100W are standard 100W bulbs with no claim to be brighter than any other 100W bulbs. The packaging was marked "For off-road use only", as these are not approved in the UK as the 55W bulbs are.

I did the sums and the headlamp relay should be capable of switching the 100W bulbs. The connectors on the E-code headlamps are very beefy and have no problem with the sort of current we are talking about (8 or 9 Amps per 100W bulb). I'm told DOT-standard headlamps have woeful connectors that will melt if you frown at them. I've never seen these, so I don't know any more about them. I did drive a US hire car (an Impala) in the dark last year and thought the headlamps were pretty useless compared to a UK-spec car. Just what you need when you're also trying to interpret strange road signs, learning funny rules (sometimes it's OK to go through a red light?) and trying to remember to stay on the wrong side of the road...

Oops, I'm rambling again...

The headlamp lens and reflector don't seem to get noticeably warmer with the 100W bulbs.

Night vision is vastly improved. The main beam (high beam) is great for driving reasonably fast on empty roads at night and the dipped beam (low beam) now allows me to see the road even when dazzled on a wet road by oncoming traffic, which I couldn't do before. I don't get flashed, so I know I'm not blinding other drivers. Then again, a characteristic of E-code headlamps is that the dipped beam pattern is tightly controlled and when properly aligned, will throw lots of useful light onto the road (and some to the kerb) without dazzling oncoming traffic.

I tried 100W bulbs in the dipped beam too, initially, but I found I had to lower the headlamps a bit to avoid having people flash me. This made the main beam less effective. Also, one of the bulbs blew after only a few weeks. However, visibility was better with the 100W dipped beam than with the 55W "high-efficiency".
