Here's an update on our Crane/MSD install into the '78 99T. We've got everything up and running now and it's quite an impressive improvement. We were indeed able to drive the stock fuel pump relay with a pulsed input (tach output of the MSD) but we needed to use an MSD tach adapter (MSD-8920). I assume the reason we needed the tach adapter is the relay draws more current than the MSD tach output can provide directly(?). The tach itself also runs off the same signal.
The results are that the car starts easier and has much smoother acceleration off boost. It's definitely more driveable around town. Also pulls harder on boost.
I agree with LJB: getting some modern ignition components in there really transforms the car!
