Long, sad tale.. I thought it was either a solenoid or the ignition switch. So I replaced the starter/solenoid and the switch. Unfortunately, the starter had the short in it - thought it was a good one, it wasn't. Put the original starter back in, switch worked fine...crank and crank, no start. Fuel pump running but not doing the auto cutoff like it's supposed to. I used starting fluid and the car started, ran and quit, showing that the ignition was in order.
I exchanged the electronic brain and manifold pressure sensor, no change. Put the originals back.
Pulled the fuel line off, cranked the motor, lots of fuel coming out. hooked it back up, went to crank the motor again and - oh no! The original problem occurred! This was key to ignition position where the alternator, brake and oil lights were on, then they shut off when the key it turned further to crank. But no crank, and upon turning the key back, no lights, nothing.
So Monday I'm getting it towed to Scanwest and let the smartypants guys there figure it out. The only good news is I replaced the entire gearshift center console with one from a '71 so I now have the reverse shift ring feature not present on my '70. Maybe the other good news is that I've been driving my son's 1972 96 with a relatively fresh motor and it's been a blast.
