Water Pump types Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 06:02:47 In Reply to: Gary - If WP has a nut it's a type II where the >>, BobD, Tue, 9 Oct 2012 08:57:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I believe that the '73-'74 cars all have the 8-tooth gear set with the brass cage and the steel gears, impeller held on by a bolt. I call that "Type 1". You can use a slide hammer on Type 1, the steel gears with coarse teeth are very strong. The Type II lost the brass cage and I'm a little uncertain about the gear - I think they went to the 12-tooth gear but it was still steel and not as weak as the later ones. So, some range of 75-76 cars had Type II, impeller held on by the left-handed nut. These I would certainly use the factory puller tool, but they are not as susceptible to damage. All '77-'80 99 and 900 have the Type III pump with the 12-tooth gear set, now in cast iron, with the impeller pressed on to the end of the shaft. These are the ones that are easy to break, and you must use the correct tools and the latest service proceedure (which was a John Moss SI from 1984 I think). I have a scanned copy of that and can send it to you if you need it - contact me off-line. The service manual for 1969-1974 cars is good as far as the instructions for the Type I pump (which is basically the same as the Triumph pump, just with a metric bolt instead of english).
Hope that helps!
