One More thing: Water Pump types Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 06:06:59 In Reply to: Water Pump types, Gary Stottler [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 11 Oct 2012 06:02:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I forgot my standard advice which is: ALWAYS reuse your existing water pump shaft, never put a new shaft in a used engine. Two reasons - one, the existing pair of gears are nicely "broken in" together, and replacing just one of the gears will cause who knows what crazy wear. Two, there were a bunch of service shafts that were either cast or machined with some bad angles and those have teeth that wear away in about 500 miles. I have always tried to save "pairs" of shafts from engines I've parted out. Hopefully I'll never need to replace the pair again (last broke gear teeth in 1986 or so I think).
