Should the fuel pressure gauge display a solid, steady 28 psi, or it a bit of fluctuating normal?
The fp should be consistent, say within 10 % roughfly
Secondly, could a clogged fuel filter cause this type of behavior? The car sat for a long time, so I pondered if the tank has crud,
Yes, it could - but so could pump failure or electric to the pump. Also leaking injectors could in theory drop the pressure- that you have the gauge between the rail and the return side. One way to check for leaking injectors see if the pressure is maintained after you should down the vehicle.
I would clean the fuel system by dropping the tank. Check for sludge and varnish smelling fuel. I would clean the pump by removing it and submerging it in diesel fuel and running it in diesel.
Blow out your feed and return lines. Inspect all return lines for leaks. The feed and return line feeds through the fire wall it becomes a metal line (as I recall) and it runs under the carper on the drivers side and runs to the back seat into the trunk.
Thirdly, where on this planet can I obtain a fuel pump for d jet system? or can an aftermarket pump work just as well..Sources?
OEM may be hard to get but they do show up from time to time. However, any number of after markets do work.
Rock auto stocks the fuel pressure regulator and injectors but not the electric fuel pump for the american market. I have seen different generic pumps used. The big racing and modification parts supplier should have something for you.
