Alright, got the head off, just had to remove the motor mount bracket. Thanks Gary!
Oddly, I don't see any obvious head gasket, head or block issues. The gasket looked fine, no blowouts or anything. The head seems completely uncorroded, much to my surprise. See pics in the link.
The symptoms were:
* obvious antifreeze on plug #2
* antifreeze on top of the block by the water pump & all along the top side of the head gasket
* never ran hot
* ran ok, not great, but idled a bit lumpy, no obvious smoke, the exhaust felt damp when I put my hand near the tail pipe.
* probably lost a pint of antifreeze when I last drove it about 2 miles & continued to get slowly lower as it sat
Now the intake manifold gasket seems like a mess. It came off in pieces & the #3 cylinder to water jacket seems like it was torn when installed. Also notable discoloration from the thermo time switch area to #2 intake. Screws around #2 are rusty & the gasket still stuck to the head is antifreeze sticky.
Is it possible it was just the intake gasket and the antifreeze was getting sucked into the #2 cylinder? Or is it more likely that there is some tiny crack in the head that I cannot see?
Major bummer if I took the entire head off only to find it was the intake gasket.
