Both the 1.7 and 1.85 engines were available in 1971, but '71 was the last year for the smaller engine. The "E" designation is given to the early models with the electronic fuel injection (Bosch d-jetronic). 1973 was the last year for the 99E, but after almost 20 years of searching I have yet to find any documentation they were even available that year. I know they were because I own one. It doesn't really matter to me because I'm not a purist who needs everything to be factory correct(unlike Gary who is just the opposite). I have accessorized mine over the past 19 years, but everything I've used has been used on a Saab, so maybe I'm still pure.
Personally I think you must be nuts to buy a 50 year old Saab half way cross the country, but your enthusiasm can be rewarded. It's a decent hobby with lots of good people in the group. If you have a facebook account, you may also want to join a few Saab 99 groups where you can share your adventures with the rest of the world.
