Doug, I just realized the missing piece of info today. I talked with Jon and I looked at how I had mounted it. At that point I realized I actually had swapped it BACK to the '73 valve after finding a NOS valve and a better heater housing to replace at the same time. That set up went into another '73 I had and sold. I did the conversion so many years ago I forgot about that. However, here is how you'd do it, the metal bracket on the '73 housing bends down in a 90 degree angle with the heater valve mounting sideways. The '74 comes down straight. You can cut the '73 bracket at the bend saving the front portion with the mounting holes and the center hole for the cover. Then bend that straight up and the '74 valve will go right in. The other way to do this really easy is to take the valve bracket off a '74 heater housing (it's riveted on) and re-apply it to a '73 housing. I'm sorry for any confusion I've caused on this issue. The main thing that I remembered is that with all those superseded parts needed to do this conversion I did it with the '74 valve and the issue of parts was and always is my main thought. I sometimes forget the important thing can also be how to make it fit. I checked on those numbers today for Jon and that '73 supersede is also now not available. I had stated it was the same supersede as the '74 and I was wrong about that. If anybody has been following this topic who has a '73, keep this in mind. Only the later valve supersedes are now available. Isn't keeping up with these remaining Saab parts fun?
