I use a good pair of needle nose pliers and turn them like a wingnut. I don't think there is a regular nut that will fit in there and still get a socket on it. Another thing you can do is take an old 10mm socket (or a new one) and grind three notches in it to fit over the wings.

Pull up the shift boot and remove plastic cover. Take out the screws that hold the shifter in the housing and pull the shifter upward. Then remove the three-winged nuts (don't lose the bolts and other pieces under the shifter housing), then flip the shifter housing over and remove the three long screws. Then flip the housing back over and pull off the top to gain access to the screws that hold the switch. (While I have the shifter housing unbolted, I usually remove the shift lockout, too. I had the tab break off under the lock cylinder one time because the lockout jammed and I've found the small return spring in that mechanism broken on several.)

On the '78 99 I'm driving, someone ground off the flanges of the "nuts" that hold the three screws that you have to undo after you flip the shift housing over. They did this to gain access to the switch retaining screws without removing the housing from the floor. The thing has a harmonic vibration at certain engine speeds.
