The bare essentials are:

If you do not move the alternator from the original spot on the 16V motor, you will need to either get an earlier (smaller) vacuum booster or hammer back the bottom left side to make room for the alt pulley. I have done it this way 4 or 5 times and it always works fine. take your time with a nice ball peen hammer and it will still look good after the repaint.

You must find a early ('83 or older) 900 water pump pulley. They are single grooved. The alternator pulley should also be single grooved, by the way, but those can be somewhat generic. you will need a dimple about 4 inches wide and 4 inches down, about an inch deep, like in the first picture Doug posted. that one looked obviously pounded back. You can cut and insert a panel that will work. I have some pics of both if you need them. I dont' have them on a website so I can't post here.

lastly, you will want the skinniest crank pulley you can find. Again and early 900 will work with the inset sleave machined or the outer grooves on a later pulley removed (also done by a machine shop). Either procedure will generally be under 35.00 to have done. You can use a 16V 3 groove pulley but you will have to move the firewall back further. Either way, the firewall "should" move back about an inch. You have enough room there, but not much. Moving it back a bit right around where the pulley will go saves a lot of knuckle skin when changing the belt. It will also give you more room for shifter adjustment when needed.

You will need to change the front tranny mount plate if you plan on using a later 5 speed. Some post a little while back mentioned getting them new from saab europe or you can find a 4 speed cover and have a small tab welded to it in order to accomodate the 5th gear opening. If you go with a '75 or later, that's all you have to modify. Some do more, some make it by with less, but I'm a fan of at least going this far. It makes the car still relatively friendly to work on and still minimizes the amount of brute modification needed.

Good luck.
