Hi all:
I was able to free the lugs, the drum/disc combo and the caliper and pads from my '72 99 thanks to half a bottle of penetrating fluid (3-in-1), a hammer and some strong tea from my Saab thermos courtesy of ScanWest in Seattle.
The wheels (in this case, the passenger front) still don't turn more than 2 inches, but I got too cold before I could remove the emergency brake shoes.
So it may indeed be a frozen clutch--although the previous owner mentioned a possible stuck E-brake.
When I first got the car a couple of years ago, I was able to push in the clutch once or twice before the pedal just went to the floor.
Three questions: :-)
If it is the clutch, how can I fix it so as to allow the front wheels to turn? I need--once again--to tow the car, so a working clutch is not the goal here...I just need the car to roll.
Also, which brake pads should I buy to replace mine with? Is there a choice of new pads with a car this old? Heh.
And should I buy new front calipers? My originals seeemed OK, but I didn't really examine the piston seals behind each (front) brake pad.
FYI: The CV joints and the rubber brake lines need replacing, but the pads and discs appeared to be in very good shape--even after sitting for 12 years.
Thanks for all your respnses and Happy Bird Day!
Joe
