Transaxles you're likely to run across are either "smooth case" or "web case." The web-case ones have a grid of reinforcing ribs cast into them, while the smooth-case ones are exactly what you'd think. I tried to link to a picture I found showing the web-case variety.
The web-case transaxles are later than the smooth-case ones, so tend to be found more on V4 cars. But I think the earliest V4s also had a smooth-case transaxle, so the fact that yours is smooth-case does NOT necessarily mean it came from a two-stroke! Anyway, if it fits (with or without a bell-housing swap) it's probably worth trying, at least while you're investigating what went wrong with the other one.
(If the freewheel suddenly stopped working and it coughed up chunks of metal at the same time, it's possible that the freewheel hub fractured. If that's the case, the really important parts of your transaxle -- the gears etc. -- might well be fine... but you really want to get that transaxle out of there and clean it, before debris from the hub gets caught between the gears and damages them. Some parts of the freewheel mechanism are brass, and WON'T be caught by the drain-plug magnet, so the only way to get rid of all the pieces is to pull off the front section and swab it out. While it's out of the car, you've also got a good chance to remove the top cover over the rear section and inspect the gears and synchronizers for wear or damage. If all checks out OK, you can put it back together and either replace the freewheel assembly with one from a salvaged car, or just lock it out with a "freewheel neutering" sleeve and do without it. As long as you don't try to remove the REAR cover or pull out any of the shafts, you can do this amount of disassembly and inspection without needing any special tools or fixtures, and getting the gunk cleaned out now may let you save one of the ever-shrinking supply of usable vintage-SAAB transaxles!)
