...removing the little inspection plate on the back of the bell housing, or just folding back the rubber "condom" over the end of the slave cylinder, and have somebody watch the linkage as you work the pedal. If it doesn't seem to keep up with the pedal, it may not be releasing all the way. (If your two-stroke is old enough to have a cable-operated clutch linkage, then this won't work for you.)
Speaking of really old two-strokes makes me think of another possibility: I used to own a doggy GT-850 that developed a hard shifting problem, and it turned out that the cause was just that the clutch mechanism had accumulated so much greasy crud around the clutch cover that it was still turning a bit even when I stepped on the pedal. This being a two-stroke, all I did was unbolt the engine from the mounts etc., then my dad and I reached in and grabbed it by the "overhead fanshaft" and heaved it out. Then I cleaned the clutch mechanism with a wire brush and brake cleaner until it worked freely, and put it back in. Problem solved.
