They have the same engine, front suspension, front body section, etc. The main differences (other than the 95 being a wagon) are that the 95 has lever shocks (same style used on many older British cars) while the 96 has conventional tubular shocks. They used lever shocks on the 95 so they wouldn't have to have towers sticking up and intruding into the load area.
Unfortunately, rocker panels don't just bolt on; they have to be welded. People do it all the time, but it's probably not a good first project for a beginner. A good 95 is a nice "driver" and very handy little beast of burden, but if you've got your heart set on one to drive rather than a project car, it might be better to look around for one that doesn't need so much fixing.
One more consideration to think about if you're serious about your wife commuting every day in it: These cars have good safety features for their era, but nothing like the multiple air bags, crush zones, etc. that you'd get in a modern small car. I've been rear-ended and sideswiped in a 96 (yes, the same one!) and it wasn't too bad, but I'd hate to get T-boned by an Escalade, for example. Eventually I got paranoid enough about this that I relegated my 95 to recreational driving only, and leased a Honda Fit for most of my mileage...
