They would have had a hard time finding an inline 4 that was as short as their previous 3-cylinder engine; that was why they wound up with the Ford V4 unit. It was about the only thing short enough to fit without needing a major redesign.

A few tips to make things a bit easier:

-- Remove the entire hood before starting work (only takes a couple of minutes once you've had some practice. An easy way to stash it is to throw a pad on the roof and lay the hood on it. Once the hood is off, you've got access from three sides.

-- For major work around the front of the engine, drain the cooling system, disconnect the headlights and hood-release cable, then remove the entire front grill panel and the radiator. Saab made this easy on purpose, so it would be easier to work on the car: Once you've disconnected the lights and cable, the whole front panel slides up out of some clips after you've removed a few screws. The radiator isn't much harder. Not counting the draining (go have dinner during that) it takes only about 10 minutes, and will save you hours of work.

-- Things low down on the sides of the engine that are hard to reach from the top often are easy to reach from the sides, through the wheel well. Put the car on jackstands, remove the front wheels, and you'll find there are several openings through which you can get at such items as the starter, water pump, and other difficult parts.

When I have any major underhood work to tackle on my 95 V4, I block out the first half-hour to do ALL the above. It's a good investment in reduced effort and reduced swearing later on...
