My Dilema:
I took off my cylinder heads to rebuild them. Got them completely overhauled which I have been so excited about because the old valves were sucked into the seats about an 8th of an inch. Today I spent the day putting the engine back together, following the steps in the original Saab manual. I am confident it is ready to start and get back on the road…So everything is back together, and i turn the key and it cranks over very well, strong battery, but not even the slightest sign of firing… I pulled a spark plug a turned the car over and no spark was there. I turned the car over with the distributor cap off and no spark in the points gap???
SO what could it possibly be. During the rebuild of the heads the only thing I touched that had to do with ignition was the distributor. I pulled it out in order to remove the intake manifold and i also pulled the condenser so i could completely remove it. The left the condenser tucked up around the engine bay support bar to keep it out of the way. In addition i pulled the idle solenoid terminal from my Weber 34ich carb. Nothing else was touched.
I am absolutely at a loss at what the problem could be. I have couple spare condensers in my trunk so I put a brand new one in…NO SPARK (yes it is connected to the points)
I Checked battery ground…NO SPARK (plus the starter is getting power just fine)
In addition the plugs, plug wires, rotor, points, cap were all just replaced.
SO all I can think of is my coil. I have an older coil that was working great up to the day i took of the heads. I never left the key in the ignition which i have heard can be the cause of a coil failure? My coil is a Blue Bosch made in spain, so not a knock off.
So as a young car owner with not a whole lot of experience with ignition, what do i do next? Is there a way to check my coil to see if it is working? Is there another component i am missing? What could have caused this to happen when i didn't change any of the ignition configuration? I want to be able to see the affect of my new Cylinder Heads!!! Thanks in advance for the insight.
