It's not unusual for temps to vary wildly, like in a 10 degree range +/- (especially in winter) depending on elevation/depression/topography/city/urban/shade/sun/wind/wind-break or any other of a host of road factors. I don't think that you've encountered anything out of the ordinary, and that your SID is probably accurate, though it may often lag a bit in it's readings.
I've experienced much the same variance in SID outside temps on both my dearly departed '94 SET and newer Passat. (Recently on my way to work the temp display went from an astounding 14 degrees to 28 degrees in a matter of miles.) And to reinforce, I've also noted definite tactile temperature differences when I walk in my own back yard. These micro-climates often are as small as a couple of feet (ask any gardener) and can range upwardsin range to any extent.
Don't worry... your temp indicator is probably pretty accurate.
