Just completed 3mo project on girlfriends 95' 900s w/177k. Would've taken less than a month if it was'nt friggin' freezing out (non-heated garage). The balance shaft elim. alone would've taken a week (w/warm weather,.. sans rust "repair" & brake work). Bought "kit" (piece of steel, x2 bolts & a washer) for $30 at Con-Tech (local saab repair shop w/good reputation). If I ever do it again, (always on the look out for a nice Aero needing tlc) I'd definately source the parts myself & save $28.50!
I opted NOT to pull the engine & it would likely have taken less time w/the engine out. After geting the pan off & using a pair of vice-grips on a torx socket (no room for a ratchet!!!) to remove all the bolts securing the timing cover...I had to lower the eng/trans about 6" & raise it back up w/an open end wrench wedged between the ac compressor bracket & the fender to force the engine over enough to get the timing cover to clear the crankshaft!!!! Yesch. (but ain't I a damn genious?!)
The car is well cared for w/3000-4000mi oc intervals using reg. mobil 10w/30 or 10w/40 depending on time of year. The inside of the motor looks marvelous - very clean, bottom end almost new looking! - The grinding noise that prompted the teardown turned out to be the balance shaft(s) timing chain spinning around the shaft(s) cogs bc the teeth were about gone,...practically nothing left! (bad steel?). The chain also chewed up some of the timing cover near the oil pump as the tensioner was not able to take up the slack.
I flushed out everything (x4 cans brake parts cleaner - the fumes of which still linger in the garage,... & my brain!) thourghaly. Of intrest to many of you who constantly refer to sludge clogging up ones sump --- I found NONE in this one & I took the pu screen/baffle out to check.
It was rec. that I use "anaerobic" gasket maker - something I was blissfully ignorant of prior to this repair. This stuff, by the way, only cures between the pieces bolted together (eg. the timing cover & oil pan) & remains gooey when exposed to air. Not knowing this, I freaked out the day after finishing everything & noticed the sealant had'nt cured. I jumped up & down, threw things & hyper-ventaled all day sunday - monday until I was able to speak w/someone who was familiar w/the stuff ~FYI~.
The car runs/sounds GREAT,... and the increased vibrations w/o the balance shaft(s) operating is/are MINIMAL - I would not hesitate to rec. that anyone (except those of you who are realy finicky.) who is faced w/this problem,...disable the buggers!
I have (as of this repair) switched to a custom blend of oil; x2 qts Mobil 1 synthetic, x2 qts Mobil syn-blend Hi-mi, & 3/4 qt reg. Mobil (4.75 qts total) all 10w/30. I figure that since I did'nt touch the camshaft(s) timing chain/tensioners [way too tired/cold to go any further] It was cheap insurance & might buy some time.
I'll spare you patient persons who read all this, the equally long description of the rust "repair" & brake pressure reduction valve(s) replacement....hope someont out there benifits from my ordeal. By the way - SPRINGFIELD IMPORTED CAR PARTS (Springfield MA) 1-413-774-2819 is a great place to do business with. The prices are exc. & all items I've purc. from them are top quality - also they ship ups typicaly in ONE DAY, cheap!
