Surely, a backflow valve might enter extra oxygen into the exhaust stream and mess with emission.
Your car is showing almost too lean condition.
You find it right around the exhaust manifold on the extra tubing. It's a UFO shaped thingy screwed onto the tubes and a black hose attached (the hose from the vacuum valve we talked about).

Did the smog shop suggest any repairs or that you go to a shop of their choice for repairs?
The reason I'm asking is that I have had a couple of cases where the car failed the NOx but the other two values were perfect.
I looked over the cars and couldn't find anything wrong. Drove them over to the smog station I use and they passed with flying colors.
Both customers had been adviced that they needed a couple of hundreds of dollars of repairs to pass the smog.
It seems that it is possible to tweak the system in how they run the smog check so that the car fails NOx.
