I've had my Yokohama AVS Sport 225/45-17 tires on since March of 2001 and I really like them a lot. Acceleration is better. Braking is better. Cornering is better. Road noise is less. Wet traction is better. Dry traction is MUCH better. Treadwear is better and more even across the tire. Sidewall is slightly taller for better wheel protection. Wider width also help protect wheels from curbs.
Do they rub? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! And I can make that statement after daily commuting, autocrossing, and even a day at a road racing track.
The only negative could be that the wider tire width does nothing to help the torque/camber steer. For me, that's a trade-off I was willing to make for the vastly superior performance of the wider tires.
The Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions seem to be another great choice, although I've had no personal experience with them.
I use Michelin Pilot Alpins mounted on BBS RK wheels for winter here in Michigan.
And don't forget to have the tires mounted using a Hunter GSP9700 balancing machine. Follow the link below to find an installer in your area. I have no personal interest in the company--I'm only trying to pass along my very positive experiences using this piece of equipment.
