The contact patch is basically a function of the tire presssure and car weight. More weight the patch gets bigger and vice versa. More air pressure the patch gets smaller and vice versa.
So if you change the tire width, you change the shape (not the area) of the contact patch. As you increase the tire width (at constant tire pressure), the patch becomes wider but skinnier. This is better for lateral handling (like going through corners); it is not good in wet conditions as it can promote hydroplaning.
