The Battery:
With CR-type button cells, the first two numbers are the diameter, and the last two numbers are the thickness, e.g. CR1632 battery is 16 millimeters diameter and 3.2 mm thick. As far as I can tell, these batteries are not available in the US except from Saab. (Apparently, they are not used in any other devices sold in the US.)
I had asked my dealer for a spare key battery way back when I first got the integrated key remote, in September 2000, but the dealer (Saab City, Framingham, MA) didn't get them in stock until about September 2001. The dealer said the original battery should last about 5 years. (Strat, did your battery die already for a 2001 9-3?) I wanted to have a spare battery in the car, because a buddy of mine had the alarm fob battery die for his 900, on a holiday weekend. There was absolutely no way for anyone to start that car without shutting the alarm off through the alarm fob. My dealer said that the 9-3 series uses a different alarm system, such that the key alone, without a battery, can disable the alarm. I actually verified this by removing the battery from my key, and I could disarm the alarm just by using the key in the door, and the car started normally.
Opening the Key:
In theory, you're supposed to be able to open the key to access the battery using a paper clip through the small hole in the side of the key. In reality, no way I could get mine open that way. The dealer told me it required a "special tool" although they didn't have one to even show me much less sell me. I ended up using a push pin, like for a bulletin board. The pointy end was long enough and sharp enough to bite into the plastic latch internal to the key, and I successfully pried open the little door.
