And the stopping, or lack thereof...
There is definitely a use for SUVs, and if I ever needed one to use as a real utility vehicle, I'd get one. But when I see a 5 foot tall blond talking on a cell phone driving a huge Expedition at 60 in 10 inches of snow riding my ass, I get pissed off.
Like today, for example, I'm driving my 9000 in about 9 inches of freshly unplowed and unpredicted snow and I'm getting onto the highway. I look to see what the lights are behind me, and there is the aforementioned blond in the Expedition on the cell phone, riding my ass. As I merge onto the highway at about 40 (remember, completely unplowed highway here), blondie decides she doensn't like 40. So she cuts left and guns it, mind you, I'm still on the ramp. Next thing I see is blondie not straightening out into a lane, but instead heading right for the median, where she ends up doing a well executed 360. I doubt there were snows on that thing.
The problem is those things don't handle well at all. And they have about 50000 billion tons to try and stop, which doesn't work out so well. I feel much more confident piloting my Saab in the snow because of how well it handles, especially in the snow. IMHO, the C900 is the best Saab in the snow, followed closely by the 9000. The NG900/OG9-3 is great too, but I have never driven a 9-5 or a 9-3SS in the snow.
Can't wait to see how much is on the ground when I wake up tomorrow! Hmm, I wonder what happened to blondie....
