I'll tell you what, posting on this site last night was about the best thing I could have done. While I haven't yet contacted the dealer to inquire about any sort of "cracked piston issue", the fact that others here have encountered the problem does give me some hope.
Also, I've already put a call in to an independent shop called Saabworks in Milford, NH. They've done work on all of the other Saabs in our family (five of which were purchased at the very dealership that today quoted me $6,074 for a used Viggen engine) and will probably give me better service for a more reasonable price.
I found a used Viggen engine in Phoenix with 62,000 miles on it. They want $2,100 for it and said it would probably cost $300 to $400 to ship it to NH. Things are not looking anywhere near as bleak as they did this morning.
I'll post follow-ups as the situation develops.
