First, don't buy a car for what other people think. You only have to please yourself, unless they are making the payments for you.
Probably part of the thing with SAAB is the name itself, and the first cars were, well, funny looking. It seemed to have taken a long time for SAAB to get past that, BMW overcame it much quicker. Second is that SAABs are known to be quirky, doing things a little bit odd compared to other car makers, but at the same time logical departures. In my mind it is part of the attraction but in other peoples' mind it is just weird. The GM influence will likely help change the perception of SAAB in the market, with the hope of the faithful that the end product is not totally diluted.
SAAB is not comparable to Porsche in most ways, but definately comparable to BMW.
Some might disagree but the Swedish car industry is comparable to the German car industry in the following way:
Volvo is about equal to Mercedes up to about the E class
SAAB is about equal to BMW - up to about the 5 series
Comparable cars, more or less priced similarly with similar utility or sportiness are offered.
Anyway, that's how I see it. FWIW I could have had either and I walked past a 3 series convert in order to get the SAAB, I like it better and there isn't a SAAB at every other stop light. BMW does make a fine motorcycle, however.
