I agree it looks like some type of control failure, and Roger already mentioned the expansion valve... so I will suggest a couple other things to look at because of the experience with my '96 900SET.

1) Inside air temp sensor. My AC (ACC) always comes on high fan and cold temp, until some temperature is established, then it starts to cycle. If the ACC can't read the temperature correctly because the temp sensor is not reading right, it seems to switch to warm air after a few minutes.

2) AC overheating for some reason. Some of the time, the AC uses the low speed setting on the electric radiator fan to cool the condenser. When this failed on my car because of cracked wire insulation, then a short and a burned out low-speed resistor at the fan, the AC overheated, and some temperature or pressure switch would disengage the compressor, and only warm air would come out. If I turned the AC off and left it off for a while, even while driving, the refrigerant temp and psi would drop, and when I turned it back on, presto - cold air for a while. Over time, the refrigerant leaked out due to the higher pressure, and when I finally took the car in, it was diagnosed as a small leak...

3) Another possibility is the relay that controls the compressor, located in the fuse/relay box near the driver side (US) firewall corner of the engine compartment.
