A 2002 with 57K miles could be an excellent car. These cars are fun, practical, reliable, and not particularly costly to own. You get a hatch, good performance, great comfort and safety.

Make sure that the car you are looking at has a documented service record that follows SAAB's recommendations for 'severe service'. Have it checked by a SAAB-specific mechanic. An independent mechanic (not a SAAB dealer) is fine.

The 9-3 is rated as having 'average reliability' in Consumer Reports data. The 2002 might well be considerably better, as some bugs were worked out though the model years. The problems which recur most frequently in these cars are relatively easy to fix in your own driveway with the help of SAABNET, using parts that are not too expensive. An example is the 'DIC' (ignition cassette) which fails in some cars. You can purchase this for ~$300 and replace it yourself in <15 minutes. Yes, it is a weakness, but its a much 'better' weakness than, for example, the fragile automatic transmissions in some late model Hondas.

After purchase, you need to keep up on maintenance. It helps if you either a) frequent a good SAAB mechanic for servicing, who can catch any issues. Ask here for recommendations. b) get yourself involved in basic maintenance and DIY repairs. Maintenance is easy on these cars, in my experience. And saabnet is here to help.
