Just had the turbo replaced 28,000 miles on our 2002 9-3 due to blue smoke/seal failure. Had a similar failure on our previous 1999 9-5 at 55,000 miles, and a friend's 2001 9-3 also needed replacement at low miles. Such seal failure seems to be a "not uncommon" occurance on late model Saabs. I don't recall early seal failures being a common occurance in the Classic 900 & 9000 years...I had a 86 SPG which had, before I lost track of it, 200,000+ miles on the original non-watercooled turbo. Is there any consensis on this website as to the cause of these early seal failures? I wouldn't think an oiling problem would be the cause, as the bearings get oiled before the seals, so they should fail first.

Is there one particular brand/model of turbo that is prevelant in these failures? I looked at the replaced turbo but found no manyfacturers name. There was an ID plate with these numbers: TD04HL-15T; s/n 011022266; p/n 9172180; MFD 49189-01800. Can anyone identify the manufacturer and model from those numbers?

My own, probably pessimistic, opinion is that these failures are the result of Saab/GM/turbo maker wanting to cut costs, resulting in a turbo lower in material and/or assembly quality.

Out car was still under warrenty so Saab picked up the entire cost of replacement, so I have no complaint there. But it's still disappointing and a bit agravating.
