There was a lot of discussion on this topic here a few years back about the head unit / CD changer compatibility for the 1999-2003 9-3 models. A search of this board would turn up a lot of discussion, but as I remember it...Saab changed over from one type of system in NG900 model to the "C-bus" system in he 9-3. The C-bus system was proprietary and tied into Saab's security system (hence the need for the Tech II to marry/divorce the head unit and changer to the car)...but as far as I know, all C-bus systems were Pioneer, even in the 9-3 and not just the 9-5. While I bought a Saab CD changer used, I believe it said Pioneer on the back and I got a spare Pioneer 6-disk cassette for it that was identical to the Saab 6-disk cassette.
The reason I mentioned Clarion earlier is that there had been reports that some early 9-3 models (early 1999) still had the older Clarion system from the NG900...and there were anecdotal accounts of a very few 2000 models that had a Clarion head unit (perhaps leftover excess parts?). Those that had the older Clarion system head unit were able to get it to work with a specific aftermarket Clarion model number changer....but I doubt that changer is still available new.
So, if your head unit says "Clarion" on the back and has a manufacture date of 1998/9 or earlier....then you may have a head unit that would work with an older Clarion CD changer....but your safest bet would be to go with a used Saab changer of the same vintage as your car.
