2000 9-3 manual air distribution control problem

About 8 years ago I had the "heater box" repair/replacement done under warranty on my 2000 9-3 hatch due to the manual air distribution knob binding. (I think it was something about incorrect grease used at the factory that did not hold up to the heat.)
Anyway, it had been fine since then in all temperatures, but a few weeks ago, I noticed it was getting harder to get the "drum" to turn when moving the air distribution knob from defrost position to dash vents or floor vents. Finally, the the knob cracked, so I ordered a new knob from eEuroparts. Once I installed the new knob, it became immediately obvious that the drum itself was binding, or that the control rod connecting the knob to the drum was not doing what it should do. I then heard a "snap" (the narrow part of the control rod breaking) and now the knob is useless.
So, the question now is am I likely to be able to fix this with just a new $25 control rod from eEuroparts (seeing as how the major repair was done in the past), or am I looking at a new major repair job on the heater box?
I saw some repair instructions on the genuinesaab.com site and it looks like it can all be done from getting access to the right side of the center console?
