Heater core question for Anders (finished it!) Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 2 Sep 2011 12:00:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Anders,
Very small technical question. When I put the o-rings, I lubed them up with dielectric grease (it is silicone-based) and I then placed them onto the metal tubes. I then put the heater core on top and pushed the metal tubes in and I felt the o-rings seat as they went in. In hindsight, I think it would have actually been better to put the o-rings in the heater core FIRST and then the tubes going in (just for peace of mind that they seated 100%).
Now, I don't know how you do it, but I drove the car and everything is great (I panicked for a few minutes when I saw the towel I put under the tube was all wet. When I got home, I saw it was just water. I guess there is condensation build up and it drains outside the car. Phew...was scary).
I am storing the car for the winter and will likely just leave everything open. Does it really matter the order I put the o-rings in? Please tell me it's overkill to drain the coolant again just for this. Reason I'm being so anal is because of the amount of work it took me to get in there, I want to be sure it'll last a few years.
Thanks so much,
Bender
