Freeze plug in popped into block

I am in the middle of installing a block heater in my '01 Viggen, but an unsavory task has devolved into a nightmare. I was using a long screwdriver and a hammer to unseat the freeze plug when I put a little too much stank on a blow and popped the freeze plug into the block.
Any ideas on how best to deal with this?
I have been trying to grab it from below using needle nose vice grips, but the plug is really much sturdier than I thought it would be and won't deform enough to come through the opening.
I would rather not have to pull the various pipes and manifold off to access the hole, but am open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks
Paul
