By increasing wattage of bulbs, whole circuit is handling more watts. And this means more heat throughout circuit. Fuses (typically) blow because of high (overload) near-instantaneous current while circuits deteriorate over time depending on wattage being handled. As watts goes up, you get more heating across junctions & connectors. This leads to premature breakdown of insulation as well as corrosion of connector surfaces. One of other posts in this thread mentions this and many of us have seen it before. By increasing bulb wattage, you are cutting into the safety margin designed (guessed/set by experience) for the circuit. So beware.
