Experience with Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10W-30.... Posted by REM in Seattle [Email] (#4) [Profile/Gallery] (more from REM in Seattle) on Tue, 03 Oct 2000 12:00:22 In Reply to: 0 w 30, anyone using it? I can relate my personal experience with Mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30. I used Mobil 1 5W-30 in my previous Saab (1984 900T) from about 10,000 miles on, changing oil and filter every 5,000 miles. At about 180,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1 10W-30 because I was tired of the oil leaks when the car sat in the garage. It helped a bit. At 242,000 miles my beloved Saab was rear-ended by a 4x4 and totaled. Over the entire life of the vehicle the engine was never opened, I never removed the head or opened the block. The turbo unit was original but had started to smoke a little. My oil usage was about 1/2 quart every 4-5,000 miles.
I was impressed enough that I run Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30 in my 'replacement' Saab, a 1998 900SET. YMMV, but it works for me. I have not tried the 'new fangled' Mobil 1 0W-30. Being in Seattle I just don't see the need for a viscosity less than 5 or 10 weight.
