Re: Is 2002 9-3 better than 1999-2001? "Better" is a personal rating.
The replies are excellent regarding what years have what you might be looking for.
My personal pros for my 1997 900 turbo hatchback include the following,
- No TCS giving me more control -- I don't drive the car in the winter.
- No limp home mode to worry about -- I've read others' mention of this and it appears to be a nuisance. Though it could be bad that I should be limping and am not if something is wrong.
- OES parts have been very much available being a less popular model.
1997 has earlier year issues resolved.
Cons,
- It's getting old (as are all models) and more major components are starting to fail.
- Previous owners used the car more than maintained it. I have had to address several developing rust concerns -- though I have to say the electrolysis base rust protection of these models is a beautiful thing compared to the relative absence of such protection on the classic SAAB models.
- Even though parts are available, some are so unique that they're long gone. I have to do my best to restore what I have, or spend years searching for someone else's aging parts. This is probably more a problem for the NG900 than the 9-3.
My worst issues have been related to the car being used in New England. Where the car has lived is a very important consideration.
