Rear brake caliper sticking on 2000 Viggen

Hi,
Yesterday while driving our nearly 20 year old Viggen, I was on the highway and heard a metallic noise from the rear. When I gently pressed the brake pedal it would stop and then come back when released.
I stopped the car, and looked and it seemed like the rear driver's side caliper was sticking because it was hot and the pad was thin and the rotor looked a bit glazed.
After stopping and driving the problem seems to have gone away, so maybe the caliper is unstuck or the pads just weren't sliding on the pins properly because the lubricant has dried up and rust has set in. I'm not sure.
The pads on the rear of this car are really, really old and were getting thin and due for replacement anyway, but I figured with the miles we put on the car, they'd last until Spring.
I flushed the brakes a year ago (or maybe it was 2). As I mentioned the stickiness seems to have not come back on the drive home, which was another hour.
What's the likelihood that the caliper is not bad and I just need to pull the pads, rotors, and relubricate and put back together? Is it possible that the outer pad was just jammed and not able to retract?
If I pull the brakes apart and the piston goes back in, does that mean I'm good or am I being foolish and will just find that I'll end up with the same problem soon with new pads and rotors, and then ruin them?
