Thanks for the email of the pics - can't say enough how lucky your son is.

Posting here for the benefit of those who may reference this thread.

As of right now, I am personally aware of 5 Lightning Blue 3 door Viggens with clean titles for sale in the US - 4 are 1999's and 1 is a 2000. It could be argued the 2000, being a much more rare version, could carry a premium. In my experience, Viggen rarity alters pricing when looking at what was built over all 4 years, and negligibly based on per year production numbers. Example, I don't see actual data saying a 2000 is worth a STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT amount more than a 1999, the market just sees them all as LB 3 doors. Your car having around 175,000 miles is the higher end of the market right now. There is a 163k car for sale right now which is the next closest in mileage, asking price is $6500.00 but a "1 to 1" is not a fair analysis and I rate your car's condition superior to this car.

The 5 cars I used, which again, constitute all clean title 3 door blue Viggens for sale within the last 30 days (that I know of), have an average mileage of 106,000 miles. This is 69,000 miles less than yours. Average condition per what I can see from the ads (I have not been able to inspect these cars personally, so this is not an exact science here) is around 4.2 on a scale of 1-5 with .5 increments. I would say this is close to how I would rate your car - certainly close enough here. Average asking price is $9,679.

I have made an adjustment to all this to remove dealer cars and focus on 4 private party vehicles to maintain consistency. Private party cars have an average mileage of 103,869; average condition of 4.13, and average asking price of $9600.00. After adjusting for mileage at a rate of $0.0067/ mile (an older number - you'd want to refine that a bit, but its close) says adjusted value would be roughly $9,123.42 for your car. I made no adjustments for condition here - I believe the difference would be subjective and minimal at this point.

The following is very specific to your policy, so YMMV. I would argue the purpose of your policy is to "make you whole", that means, get a comparable vehicle in your driveway within the limits of the policy. It is not fair to make your insurance buy you a 75,000 miles car here, but it is not fair to make them buy you a rusted out SE either. You could make the point that, per industry metrics, standards, and proven over sampling, the average dealer marks vehicles 30% higher than private party sale - which would mean your car now has a dealer lot sticker value of about $11,860. Most insurance companies will add an additional arbitrary adjustment for "negotiation". I think its wrong but I usually humor them and adjust down 10%, in your case to $10,674.40.

I would then make the argument that making you whole includes covering paying new title and tax fees - these will need to be based on your state fees. Once you get a final total, I'd make sure to subtract your deductible and that number would be what I would target. I'd guess this puts you somewhere around $10,000.

Insurance could make the argument they aren't required to pay a "dealer mark up" which can be fair. I would then argue that private parties are less likely to negotiate, and you would take the Private Party value, with no negotiation, $9123.42 + tax, title, etc.

Just my thoughts here - but I wanted to spell out my thought process. This is most likely far more transparent and thorough than anything they will offer you. I'd challenge them to explain their process as thoroughly without using the phrase "proprietary knowledge/ intellectual property"

The balancing act here: If they offer a good offer, might be worth taking it vs fighting. But if they challenge you, remind them your offer is based on facts and data and very transparent calculations. Judges like that vs "we hired someone who did something but we can't tell you HOW they did it." Judges are also really not fans of the valuation companies insurance companies use for a lot of reasons, so well reasoned facts are good to have here.

Best of luck! Myself and the rest of SaabNet are here if you need us - just ask!
