Wrist Pin failure or something else?
Posted by DADunn [Email] (more from DADunn) on Mon, 5 Apr 2021 04:12:20
Bought a 2002 9-3 convertible recently with 236K miles for very good price. But it has a bad pinging knock. Seller said he had it diagnosed as a bad wrist pin. Drove Milwaukee to DC with no problem. Bad sound at idle and on acceleration, lessens when not under load. Tried Moly and Lucas to no avail. One Saab tech here suggests it is starved lifters and I need to have the sump cleaned out. Sump was last cleaned in 2012. (Started in on that myself and decided I was not up to dropping the sub-frame.) I have also read it could be other things like a worn oil pump. Would like to try to pinpoint the real issue before I have a shop tear into it. Suggestions? Thanks.
