Thinner oil for winter ?

My trusty (non Saab) mechanic has recommended that I change my oil from the current 10W/40 to 5W/30 over the winter. Presumably this will mean it will heat up quicker and get to all those important places better - but he's warned against high speed long runs.
What is the considered opinion of the Board ?
94 SET 94K - oil changes every 10K until 90K (when purchased) - planning to change at least every 5K from now on, especially as I mainly do stop-start short journeys.
