DI casette problem ?

I have noticed a ticking sound (rather like tappet/lifter noise) that only comes on when the car is warm, it varies with rpm and seems to be coming from somewhere behind the main block on the idle pulley side. I used my stethoscope and couldn't identify it further - specifically not very audible on the DI casette. But also the engine has started to intermittently surge to 2000 rpm 3 or 4 times when first started (from cold or warm) and then settle down. No problems with hesitation or power when in motion. Plugs are good (6ES's) idler pulley and serp belt replaced recently. Higher grade fuel makes no difference. Oil change (from 5W30 to 10W40) makes no difference (including a concentrate claimed to help bad hydraulic lifters). The ticking noise is more noticeable inside the cabin than outside when hood is down.
My indie mechanic (non Saab) reckons the noise "ain't too bad" and is the lifters, but the noise isn't there from cold.
So I'm beginning to think DI - but what do the experts on the board think?
TIA
