Maybe a C/V joing will make noise after driving for some time, I have never used this method. Here is a tried an true method. I think it may even be listed in Haynes. Find a large enough area of smooth road, NOT an Interstate! :) How 'bout a parking lot or commuter lot. Anyways, you will want to perform multiple figure eights. Start with wide turns and also lock to lock turns. (turn wheel till it won't turn no more) Do this slowly so you can hear things. If the CV is bad or going bad you will hear some mettalic noises, usually clicks as you turn. You do not need to go more than 5 mph. Good luck. Generally C/Vs only go bad if the boot surrounding it has been compromised. So also check the boots, move the pleats around and check carefully, turning the steering wheel to inspect thoroughly.
regards,
Bryan C
