Okay, so I asked my certified SAAB tech how much it would cost to fix my CHECK ENGINE/CHECK GEARBOX lights problem, and he told me that the part that needs to be replaced is the transmission range switch, which has gone bad. The part has INCREASED in price, to $295, he says, and including labor (2 hours @ $78/hr = $156), the total is $451 (not including tax).

And, check this out--the reason why my convertible top won't go down is because the "FIFTH BOW LATCH MOTOR IS BAD." (<---Actual wording from the work estimate.) He even included a photocopied page from some SAAB "Customer Satisfaction Campaign 450" which indicates that "on certain cars, the fifth bow latch motor can seize when the top is folded up or down. This means that the top cannot be operated using the ROOF button. To avoid this problem, the fifth bow latch motor should be replaced as described below." The spare parts kit is $230 and the labor is again $156, and my total for THAT problem is $386 - not including tax.

So, my friends, couple that with the $500 35,000-mile major service, and I am forking over almost $1,500 for repairs!

Being a new SAAB owner, I must ask -- are the prices I've been quoted reasonable?
