'97 900 setc, 37,000 miles, (i bought it at 25k, first 10k at 3 miles to work stop/go zoom zoom!, last 2k at 8 miles to work, 90% highway). i've had the check engine light on for a few hundred miles now, finally went to Autozone and had the "free diagnostic check." it came back:

-ect sensor shorted
-o2 sensor bad.

didnt right down the codes, just the diagnosis. i just read in another post that said "because of problems reported by these sensors, the computer could alter air/fuel mixtures and all the various other things, causing other sensors (like the O2 sensor) to report problems. "

37k seems a little early for a bad o2 sensor, could the shorted ect sensor be causing a misreading of the state of the o2 sensor?

is the autozone device even usually right (the ol' "you get what you pay for" problem)? it's giving an error code for the coolant sensor (right?) but the SID is not reporting low coolant or any other condition.

before this happened i had radiator flush at jiffy lube (never again! i promise) ran through a tank with the slick50 fuel injector cleaner, and switched, owing to budgetary concerns to a verrrry conservative driving style.

i was starting to get about twice the mileage of my old driving style, and then when the CEL came on i noticed a slight dip, which i'm not sure isn't just from increased a/c use.

in every way the car seems "fine" but i'm coming up on my first DIY oil change (went to dealer/jiffy lube, before), and figure i should tackle the o2 and ect at the same time if required.

last question, how/what exactly do i do to/with a shorted ect sensor?

thanks,
franks
