Had Saab for 2 weeks....now reverse gear problems

Hey there,

I'm really in trouble. I just bought a 95 900S coupe w/ 85K miles two weeks ago. Before I bought the car, I took it to a Saab garage for a prepurchase inspection. The inspection turned up a broken distributer and the need for rear breaks. Other than that, the mechanic said it was clean. Based on this, I bought the car. Now, two weeks later, I bring the car back to the mechanic for the distributer and he tells me that the reverse is going. I had recently noticed that the car would occasionally be difficult to put into reverse or would pop out when engaged. The mechanic told me that this was a known Saab issue and that he had fixed this problem on at least 5 900's in the last year. This fix is not covered by Saab and will run me about $1700! I asked him why he didn't catch this HUGE problem two weeks ago while doing the prepurchase and said that it didn't present itself at the time (!?) Okay, so my question is...Is this a known Saab issue? Does it just appear out of nowhere? If I don't fix it now will it destroy the rest of my transmission. Does the mechanic have any obligation to stand by his prepurchase recommendation? Any advice would really be helpful. I've only had the car for two weeks!
